Connections: to the World Beyond the Book

"The SUV vs. Compact Car - a traffic accident" includes physics that is applicable to the world beyond the book. Car collisions occur on the daily and there is always the issue of knowing who was at fault. Before completing this worksheet, I had no idea that so many physics related factors are involved in a car collision. For example, I did not know that friction plays such a huge role in car collisons, and how much info brake marks can provide. I was able to deduce that the SUV was at fault; he was going over the speed limit and that led to him skidding and losing control of his vehicle. I also was able to deduce that the compact car's decision to collide with the SUV was logical because it lessened the energy absorbed by him.
Some goals to aim for in relation to making connections to the world beyond the book is to be always looking for physic concepts in everyday situations. For example, I could relate static and dynamic friction to yaw or brake marks. A long term goal could be to develop the skill of being able to calculate different physics concepts instead of just knowing that the concept relates to some acivity.

Perseverance/ Persistence
The Phet Simulation: Energy Skate Park required perseverance and persistence. The first dilemma was that the Ipad verison was not as up to date as the computer version and so some of the questions were impossible to answer unless you had a computer. I used perseverance to power through and overcome the application issues and get the worksheet done. I collabortated with friends in an attempt to understand how the app worked. We were able to complete the worksheet, correctly and on time, but only because we showed perseverance.
Some goals to aim for in relation to persistence and perseverance is to make the effort to understand how exactly the application works and be familiar with the different editions. If I am having issues, I should try to get assitance from a peer or teacher instead of just being stuck and getting nothing done. Persistence, I feel is a trait necessary to succeed in IB physics because the majority of the time you wont get things done right the first time, and or you will run into some type of roadblock. Persistance makes overcoming these "obstacles" possible.

Collaboration
The thermal physics packet required collaboration because without teamwork completing this packet would have been impossible. The packet included a massive variety of thermodynamic problems and none of us knew how to do every type of problem in the packet. For example, I completed the problems that dealt with finding thermal energy (Q=mc(delta)T, Q=mL), Aaron completed the problems dealing with p-v diagrams, and roger completed problems dealing with ideal gas laws. Through collaboration, we were able to complete the packet and even have time to do a holistic review of the packet to ensure we all completed the problems correctly.
Some goals to aim for in relation to collaboration is to perhaps go through problems in a packet or worksheet, simultaneously, instead of splitting up the work. I feel if we all went through a packet/worksheet together and collaborated on each problem It would allow for a general consensus of how to approach a certain style of problem. It would also ensure everyone has a good grasp of the content.

Quarter 2 Reflection
I believe, I accomplished my quarter one goal because throughout quarter 2 I utilized all of the habits of mind that I said I was going to make use of in this quarter. This allowed me to excel on lab, quest, and worksheet problems. I can already tell that I am becoming a more advance physicist; my quality of work is improving and material in class is beginning to make more sense. Moving forward, I am going to ensure that I take notes during Mrs. Stender's lectures because I tend to zone out and that leads to me missing out on detailed explanations of concepts. The difference between quarter 2 and 1 is that now I utilize more habits of mind and this allows me to gain knowledge faster and understand tough concepts quicker in comparison to last quarter.
